The lesson on July 26, 2020 was part 6 of “John’s Gospel” study.  Wayne opened the lesson with a discussion of the formula for updating your understanding of a subject needs to happen by reducing the impact of your strong prior understanding to avoid being stuck in tradition instead of being updated with better data (scripture).  He then proceeded to answer this weeks questions: 1.What is the link between the third and fourth signs all about? 2.What does the expression “son of man” mean? Jn. 1:51; 3:13-14; 5:27; 6:27, 53, 62; 8:28; 12:23, 34; 13:31. 3.What does the expression “son of God” mean? Jn. 1:34, 49; 6:69; 10:36; 11:4, 27; 20:31. 4.What does “only begotten” mean? Jn. 1:14, 18; 3:16, 18. 5.What is the background to “testimony” from a Mosaic legal standpoint? Jn. 3:32-33; 5:34; 8:17; 21:24, Deut 19.15. Wayne spent some time on providing the answer to the expresson “son of man”.   The scripture reading was in John 5:39-47 KJV

“39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me. 40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. 41 I receive not honour from men. 42 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you. 43 I am come in my Father’s name, and ye receive me not: if another shall come in his own name, him ye will receive. 44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only? 45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. 46 For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?”
