Introduction

Last time we looked at the commonality of the gospel which Paul and the apostles preached. The mid-Acts position is seriously undermined when 1 Cor. 15 is carefully considered. The mid-Acts assumption that the gospel is "the mystery" and that Paul's gospel of 1Cor. 15 is in some sense hid in God is found wanting.

According to the scriptures 1 Cor 15:1-4 ("the Mystery" hid in God) "Whether it were I or they" 1 Cor. 15:11 ("common salvation", Jude 1:3 - the message was in common with the apostles ) "So we preach" -- this was the way Paul and the apostles preached (you...

Introduction:

Last time we looked at the first 10 verses of 1 Cor. 15 which talks about the foundation of the gospel. We noted that there is an awkward "if" in the salvation condition which we discovered expressed the fact that the gospel that was received and in which the Corinthian believers stood would result in salvation if they held in what word Paul preached to them. Paul clearly received by revelation the gospel and yet it was also according to scriptures. We also learnt abouty the untimely birth (abortion) mentioned in vs 8.

Chapter 15:11-20

In verse 10 Paul...

Introduction

Last time we looked at the last portion of chapter 14.  The issues related to prophecy and women teachers in the church. It was found that men and women were to function differently in the church and that this was not something that was found in only one age but was rooted in the Genesis of mankind and hence inter dispensational. These different functions are not surprizing when one considers the differences both morphological and psychological. The Christian faith proposes the best model of functionality and peace from God. Rebellion to this will have its fruits and we see...

Introduction:

Last time we looked at the rules for speaking in tongues and mentioned the last portion of chapter 14 relating to women and their place within the church administration.

Today we will take this a little further starting from the gift of prophecy.

Chapter 14: 29-40

KJV  1 Corinthians 14:29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge. 30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. 31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are...

Abstract

This article introduces the student of scripture to the subject of the callings of God. It is a first pass through this deep subject.

Introduction

To know God's general and specific callings on our lives is an important issue. At the time of our initial conversion we may have had some notion of what God requires and expects of us from an increased awareness and sensibility to the gospel and general biblical teaching of right and wrong. However we may also be bombarded with many voices claiming special knowledge and light into God's will and this is not only talking of...

Introduction

Last time we examined the last verses of chapter 13 and went over the usage of the root of the verbs "καταργηθήσονται" and "καταργηθήσεται" which are translated in this passage "they shall fail" and "it shall vanish away" respectively.

KJV  1 Corinthians 13:8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

After Trusting In Christ ...

If you are saved there would have been a time in your life when you trusted in the finished work of Christ on the cross at Calvary to save you from the consequence of sin. This simple act of faith marks the start of your Christian life and should not be under-rated. The preaching of the cross is of vital importance and so we must strive to present the gospel of salvation in clear and unequivocal terms.

Many Christians however never leave this message and fail to grow in the Lord so that after salvation a time of attrification and stagnation occurs. Is...

Bayes' Rule

Scientific research seeks to make inference about population parameters from data. The way this is done is to gather data, and use it to test and investigate a particular theory. The theory will often be formulated in terms of parameters which are unknown and need to be estimated from the sample data. Of course scientists will have some prior belief about these parameters. The Bayesian view of statistics provides a paradigm that scientists can implement to establish their latest beliefs about the parameters of a model. If we allow theta to represent the parameters of interest...

  Introduction:

Last time we examined most of the 13 verses of chapter 13 concerning the enduring "charity" or christian love. The signs and wonders were a part of a temporary manifestation of the powers of the age to come (Heb 6:5). This reminds us that the "Mystery" given to PAul the prisoner was not a part of the revelation given to the Acts believers. This has many consequences when interpreting this thirteenth chapter.

The bomb shell for those of us who were taught that "the body of Christ" began in Acts is the Fact that this is wrong and any...

Introduction

Last lesson mainly concerned the meaning of the 27th verse:  "Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. (1Co 12:27 KJV)" -- where it was discovered that the idea of the Corinthians being a body of christ was that they were made so by their "part" in the body -- they functioned particularly -- so would the body at Rome have a different combinatorial mix to satisfy the needs at that locality.

We will continue to ask the same question (slide above) as we compare the Acts body  with  the body created by God at the end of the...
